The First COVID-19 Case in Toronto

Toronto calls in the superheroes to help with vaccinating young children against COVID-19. Meanwhile, thousands are unemployed.

Toronto, Ontario, March 5, 2020. On March 1, Toronto recorded its first case of COVID-19. A 40-year-old man, travelling from Toronto, left the province for Germany on March 3. He returned on March 15 to Toronto to stay in a hotel while quarantined. Shortly thereafter, he began to develop fever and cough. He was isolated, with no travel history outside of the province. He was in close contact with two other people who had recently returned from travel in Wuhan, China. He tested negative for the COVID-19 viral genome by March 8. On March 9, the public health authorities decided to extend the public health alert until a clearer time to contain the spread of the virus. On March 28, Toronto Public Health confirmed the first case of COVID-19 in a man with travel history in Wuhan. On the following day, he also developed illness with fever and other symptoms, but he tested negative on the COVID-19 test. On the same day, the same hotel confirmed that it had returned the first lady with travel history in Wuhan to Toronto from China. The woman tested negative on March 30 when she presented herself at a laboratory for her next test. On March 31, the woman tested positive to COVID-19. She had been to Wuhan, and had returned to Toronto, while the case of the 40-year-old man was tested at the Canadian Public Health lab in Toronto.
