The election of Barack Obama as the first black US president in 2008, followed closely by a win for the first female US president, led to a wave of hope worldwide for the democratic movement in Kenya.

But in 2012, the tide turned for the opposition party, when the country was invaded by troops from neighboring Ethiopia in what was later dubbed the “Mombasa Crisis.”
