What Bosses Really Think About Returning to the Office

Every day my husband returns to his job.

It’s not a question of whether he’ll stay. It’s a question of when.

The decision made more difficult by his family’s desire to keep him at home as much as possible.

“Your Dad’s an awesome boss. He’s very hands-on and extremely supportive. And you know what? He’s really a great guy,” she said. “I’m grateful for his encouragement. He’s the best boss I’ve ever had.”

But as Mom has grown older and more frail, his job has fallen increasingly out of the picture on the weekends.

And as Dad’s physical limitations slowly fade, his support system has disappeared. He was once a regular on my husband’s Fridays. Today, he usually doesn’t make the trip.

The decision made more difficult by his family’s desire to keep him at home as much as possible.

Instead of returning to his job at the office, Dad’s made the decision to stay home on his days off.

“I feel great. I feel like I’m getting a second wind. I’m able to get into things I might have been nervous about,” he told me after his first return to the office this week.

Before I knew Dad, I was worried about the job part. What if I made a mistake? What if I screwed up? What if I didn’t hit the nail on the head?

Now I’m worried about the guy part. What if my husband isn’t good enough? What if he’s too nice? What if he cheats on me?
