Vampire Squid: A Creature of the Deep
The vampire squid, Vampyroteuthis infernalis which translates to “vampire squid from hell“, combines both the features of octopodiformes and decapodiformes. The vampire squid is not technically a true squid, named for its blue eyes, reddish-brown skin and webbing between the arms.
A small squid with a length of 28cm. Females are larger than males, has 8 long arms and 2 filaments, suckers are found on distal half of arms, there are 2 fins on the dorsal surface of mantle. There is a metamorphosis in the size, shape and position of fins as the squid grows which is an interesting phenomenon. When the mantle is 15-25 mm inlegnth, a second fin develops in front f the first fin, and when the new pair matures, the original pair is reabsorbed.
The new fins change the vampire squids swimming style from jet to fin propulsion. It’s body is similar to a jelly fish. They can be found in temperate or tropical regions of the ocean and not considered to be threatened or dangerous to humans.
